Minimally Invasive Knee Replacement

Many people with debilitating arthritis of the knee often seek alternative treatment options before opting for surgery. Often times, these modalities fail, and that is when surgery is usually indicated. An x-ray will reveal the extent of the osteoarthritis.

A total knee replacement entails cutting and shaping all of the arthritic parts of the knee using precise measuring and cutting tools. The total knee implants that we use are made by Zimmer, a well known name in the orthopedic industry, and consist of Titanium, cobalt-chrome, and polyethylene material. The implants are always cemented to the bone using a special bone cement that ensures fixation of the implants . Minimally Invasive total knee replacements are done using a small incision that avoids cutting into any muscle, which was done in the past. Utilizing this technique, patients spend far less time in the hospital than with a traditional total knee replacement, and recovery is faster. Patients can usually start walking the next day after surgery and usually in two weeks walk in the office with a cane for suture removal.
